Finally on Facebook

facebook_logo So after a long debate, I decided to join Facebook. My main reason behind this was The Famous Entrepreneurs Series that will be held on November 17, 2009 at Storer Auditorium in Ferrante Hall at Onondaga Community College. One of the speakers will be Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes. Clearly this would be a good opportunity to become acquainted with the leading social network site on the web.

About 6 or 7 months ago I signed up for twitter (@davitjones) and found it extremely helpful. Mainly I use twitter to follow web professionals, graphic designers, web developers and artists. It serves as a constant library of inspiration and information. I am still determining what the benefit of facebook will be for me…

What do you use Facebook for?

The Lost Symbol

If you happened to catch my last tweet @davitjones you would have noticed that I received the new Dan Brown book, “The Lost Symbol.”  After much criticism from my wife who purchased the book for me, (from Best Buy by the way… they have it cheaper than most book stores) I finally finished! I will spare you a lengthy review, because you might want to read it yourself.

Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol"

Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol"

“The Lost Symbol” is a follow up to Dan Brown’s last novel, “The Da Vinci Code.” I have read all the Dan Brown novels and I guess you could compare Dan Brown with a fine wine, keeps getting better with time… This just might be my favorite one to date, although “Angels & Demons” and “Digital Fortress” were both great reads. I really enjoy how Brown integrates a great deal of history, art and suspense in a relatively short story. Just over 500 pages, this race through Washington, D.C. will keep your interest level high!

Read them all…

  • Angels & Demons
  • Deception Point
  • The Da Vinci Code
  • Digital Fortress
  • The Lost Symbol

District 9 Movie Review

district9

District 9 is a documentary-style science fiction movie that is set in present day Johannesburg, South Africa. Produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Niell Blomkamp, District 9 makes reference to the social injustices of the apartheid system that was enforced by the South African government between the 40’s and 90’s.

The movie opens with human interviews, explaining the situation that happened 28 years ago. An alien spaceship lands over Johannesburg, South Africa carrying millions of malnourished and seemingly enslaved non-humans. With no way of leaving, the vessel is stranded. The government and Multinational United (MNU) has no option but to round up the masses of aliens into  camps in the militarized zone known as Distric 9.

Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is assigned as head agent of MNU and given the task of issuing eviction notices to 1.8 million aliens, and transferring them to the new holding camps “District 10”. The focus of MNU is to extract weaponry from the aliens which is biologically engineered to only work with the alien DNA. While issuing eviction notices, Wikus happens across a canister with alien writing inscribed on it.  Assuming the canister contains alien weaponry, it is confiscated. While describing the markings Wikus accidentally activates the canister and sprays fluid over is face. Following the contact with the fluid, Wikus begins bleeding black ooze from his nose.

Quick Review:

District 9 is gritty and clever sci-fi movie that draws parallels to the apartheid system introduced to the South African people in 1948, segregating individuals into racial groups. Although relatively low-budget, this movie delivers great visuals and entertainment and defies the normal sci-fi convention; corny storyline and even worse “B-List” quality actors. This movie is thought provoking and entertaining at the same time. This is a great glimpse into the prejudices that people face daily. District 9 is a great departure from the normal brainless, eye candy summer blockbuster.

Wii Resort Review

wiiresort_review

Friday night was filled with more than a Wii bit of excitement thanks to Wii Sports Resort! Now me personally, I am a Playstation 3 fan all the way… but I do enjoy the occasional fun filled night of Wii. Get some friends together, grab a few brews, throw in some quirky characters and I guarantee you will laugh until the night is over.

Wii Sports Resort provides you and up to 3 additional friends the opportunity to explore Wuhu island and participate in 12 exciting sports;

  • Air Sports
  • Archery
  • Basketball
  • Bowling
  • Canoeing
  • Cycling
  • Frisbee®
  • Golf
  • Power Cruising
  • Swordplay
  • Table Tennis
  • Wakeboarding

My top 3 would have to be Archery, Table Tennis and Frisbee®. The Archery takes a fair amount of skill and a real steady hand. The Table Tennis is fun for a real quick game and Frisbee® feels real fluid. You are sure to make a fool out of yourself playing any of the games listed above, but I highly recommend practicing Swordplay before bragging to friends that you purchased this game. There is nothing like being knocked senseless off a platform while hovering over 30 Wii meters from the water below.

If you are looking for a good times with your friends, invest in the Wii Sports Resort, but make sure to grab an additional motion plus remote, 1 player games are not fun.

Kitchen Renovation Final Stage

kitchen_fina0809

July 29, 2009 and we finally have our counter tops installed, our sink is turned back on and we have a functioning kitchen again. So let me give you some background information  on this renovation… May 30th (I believe) I got myself into a large scale kitchen renovation, demo, minor framing, all new electric and plumbing, fresh drywall, new cabinets from Lowes, Granite countertops, ceramic floors and all new appliances from Best Buy (which is the best place to get your appliances by the way). Seems like a lot right, well you are damn right… what was I thinking?

Well to be honest, I enjoy doing home renovations and I have a great father, father-in-law and brother-in-law who came into town to help with some of the more frustrating aspects of the renovation. Don’t get me wrong, this has been an incredible process and I have learned a plethora of information, I just could not wait to have a kitchen again.  After 2 plus months of washing dishes in your basement and bathroom, I’m ready to set the dishwasher on some serious un-payed overtime. I still have some minor things to finish, but for the most part we are back up and running… time for my lovely wife to make some lovely meals!

At this point I can imagine you are thinking, well what about some step-by-step pictures, how about some great tips from the do-it-yourself homeowner, photos of the demo,  what about the before shots? First blog here folks, cut me a break. The best I can do for you is send you to flickr at the moment and let you peruse through the Renovation images. I will mostlikely comment on the renovation in detail with future posts, and I can’t imagine that this is the only thing on the honey-do list…
